The Goal of Creation
Q: Why did the Lord create the World?
A: Why does a flower smell and why does the wind blow and why does fire burn?
Q: A flower smells by itself. However, the Lord pursues a goal through the creation of the World, but a flower smells aimlessly.
A: It may well smell aimlessly but not vainly. The Creator spontaneously created creatures [yet] He is not after any goal otherwise there would be a distance between Him and His goal. Therefore, there would be some place where He would not present and a spot empty of His presence. Well, there is no distance between Him and anything - whether concrete or abstract or even spiritual.
Should He have any intention - according to what you mean by this word - He would be waiting for results. Yet He is not waiting; for waiting goes with change and movement. He is not waiting for any goal [to reach]. Waiting is for someone who lives in present time and is looking to the future, while past, present and future are creations of the Creator Most High.
He has no whish; for if He had, He would be in need.
Q: You then mean that there is no goal in the creation of the World?
A: No. I am saying the creation is quite purposeful, yet the Creator does not follow any goal.
Q: It is not conceivable that mankind do follow any purpose in doing things!
A: We are talking about That-Kind and not about mankind.
Q: But the religion says otherwise. According to the Koran and Islamic Traditions, there was a purpose to the creation of the World!
A: Yes. It has been said in the Koran that creatures were created to worship the Lord of the Worlds. But worshipping has a different meaning than what is understood by most people otherwise we would step into polytheism.
Q: Does God really need my or other creatures' worship?
A: He is beyond any need; yet we do need Him. Our worship, or the expression of our love, takes us from non-being to being and from non existence towards existence. Imagine a kind person who intends to find someone to care for. But who is really in need [in this relation], the kind person or he who receives his care? The least the kind person could do is to be nice with his own person. He could reveal his love in his imagination and thoughts. He could sing and let kindness flow through his song. This would not mean he is weak nor has a failing. But a person who needs love and has died because of its lack is much in need of receiving it.
When a kind person shows his affection it is out of generosity and grace and not out of need. However, someone who needs love is weak and helpless; and by receiving love he becomes complete and goes from non existence towards existence.
Q: But it is not always as you say. Sometimes, the Lord shows His wrath instead of his love and punishes people.
A: And sometimes a beloved punishes his lover to get him closer and to eliminate distances and remove obstacles. This punishment is like her very love, just like a mother punishing her dear beloved child because [he has committed] an error which consequences would be detrimental to him.
Her punishment is like her very affection for it is for the sake of her child.
Q: Let's go back to our previous question, why did God actually create man?
A: He said, "I was a hidden treasure and I desired to reveal myself. I created man to reveal myself."
Q: Isn't this very desire a sort of need in per se?
A: Need is a move from weakness towards strength. Yet, giving and compassion move from strength and transcendence towards flaw and lack.
Q: Why did God suddenly decided to reveal Himself and He did not think of it previously?
A: Since pre-eternity, His will was to reveal Himself. There was no suddenness in it.
Q: Why did God actually want to reveal Himself?
A: Why does light illuminate? Does it have other desire besides lighting up? Does [it first] intend to illuminate everywhere and then everywhere becomes illuminated? Of course not; illuminating is an inherent characteristic of light. Creativity and creating are consequent emanations of the Creator's existence.
